When it comes to creepy crawlies, many of us harbour a deep-seated fear of spiders in particular. If you're amongst those who shudder at the sight of these eight-legged visitors, you'll want to take heed as spiders' mating season approaches.
These unwelcome guests will be making themselves at home until October, but fortunately, experts have stepped forward with some handy solutions for repelling spiders naturally. The specialists at Magnet Trade have identified kitchens and bathrooms as the prime targets for spider invasions. Paul Strong, a store operations manager, began: "Like all species, spiders need water and moisture to survive."
"From sinks and dishwashers to the warmth given off from appliances, it's the kitchen and bathroom that create the perfect moist environment to draw them in."
Although Paul says spiders are mostly harmless, we still don't want spiders getting into food or giving us a fright.
"Supermarkets charge anything from £5-£11 for spider repellent. Using natural tricks to do the work for you is not only cheaper, but the chemical-free method makes your home look and smell amazing."
So, let's explore how we can deter spiders from creeping inside. Remarkably, one of the most effective methods costs about 20p: lemon peels.
Paul exlained that putting lemon peels on windowsills is "one of the easiest and most effective tricks" that's the fraction of the price of a shopbought repellent.
"Rub lemon peels all over the windowsills or anywhere spiders tend to perch, such as on skirting boards and bookshelves. The strong citrus scent will repel them away and give your home a lovely fresh scent."
The expert suggested: "You can make your own budget-friendly and natural spider repellent by mixing an essential oil (approx. 20 drops) and water in a spray bottle.
"Spray corners of your home or any moist areas that attract the insects. The best essential oils to use are tea tree, lavender, peppermint, citrus and cinnamon."
Strong also recommended cinnamon as a smell spiders hate: "This isn't just a scent for autumn and Christmas!"
"The strong scent of cinnamon is perfect for keeping spiders away. Dot cinnamon sticks around your home or grab yourself a cinnamon-scented candle to burn and you'll be sending those spiders packing in no time.
"If cinnamon isn't your preferred scent, any candle that contains citronella will do the trick."
