It's been described as a 'masterpiece' and an 'explosive' drama like no other - and now it's streaming free on BBC iPlayer. Unlike many hit adaptations, Twisted Metal is not based on a bestselling book, but a PlayStation game.
Hollywood is turning to game franchises more and more for inspiration, with some of the biggest shows in the world right now being inspired by PlayStation titles, including Pedro Pascal HBO smash The Last Of Us, as well as Amazon Prime Video's Fallout series. Twisted Metal stars Anthony Mackie, who is also the newest Captain America in the Marvel universe. The action follows one man's desperate journey across a post-apocalyptic wasteland and is very much Mad Max meets Fast and Furious, but it doesn't take itself too seriously.
Viewers have been raving about series 1. One Google reviewer wrote: "A Thrilling and Explosive Masterpiece
"I'm 36 years old and had grown up as a child playing games like Destruction Derby, sonic, Alex the kid and Twisted Metal.
Twisted Metal was an all time classic and I was surprised to find they had created a tv adaption of it.
"From the very first episode, it's evident that the creative team behind Twisted Metal spared no expense in crafting a visually stunning and action-packed world.
The show flawlessly captures the dark and twisted atmosphere of the video game series, immersing viewers in a post-apocalyptic landscape where chaos reigns supreme. The attention to detail in the production design, the gritty visuals, and the breathtaking special effects all contribute to an immersive experience that truly captivates the audience."
An IMDB reviewer said: "I had absolutely no idea what to expect from Twisted Metal since I never played the game. All I could go by was the trailer and it made it look like it was going to be a fun show to watch. Well, this show it only met my expectations but surpassed them. I've really enjoyed it so far.
"Anthony Mackie does a great job as the lead in this and the supporting actors/actresses also all do a pretty good job making this show worthy of watching.
"Some of it's ridiculous, but it's supposed to be. Just turn your brain off and you'll have a good time watching this. I love that they released all 10 episodes at the same time because this series is best watched binged. The episodes are only about 30min long so you can binge the 10 episode first season pretty quick."
Twisted Metal is streaming free on BBC iPlayer now.
