Narendra Modi: In 1958, 'Vakil Saheb' had come to Vadnagar in Mehsana, Gujarat to administer the oath of allegiance to the Sangh to the child volunteers; then eight-year-old Narendra Modi was also included in the line of those child volunteers.
Who doesn't know Prime Minister Narendra Modi today? Narendra Modi is considered a powerful leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the country, and he is celebrating his 75th birthday. However, before joining the BJP, Narendra Modi was a long-time member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and held various positions. There's a long story behind Modi's association with the RSS, one part of which involves the "lawyer sahab" who initiated Narendra Modi into the RSS, and during that time, Narendra Modi even washed the lawyer's clothes.
Who was that lawyer?
The lawyer who helped Narendra Modi join the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was none other than Laxman Rao Inamdar, who was born in Pune, Maharashtra. Laxman Rao Inamdar studied law at Poona University and was a pracharak in the RSS. Therefore, RSS workers fondly called him Vakil Saheb. The ban imposed on the RSS after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi was lifted on July 11, 1949. Following the lifting of the ban, under Golwalkar's leadership, the RSS began expanding beyond Maharashtra and establishing its roots in other states. Laxman Rao Inamdar was given the responsibility of furthering the organization's work in Gujarat.
How did PM Modi join the Sangh?
In 1958, Vakil Sahib was visiting Vadnagar, a small town in the Mehsana district of Gujarat, where he had come to administer the oath of allegiance to the Sangh to child volunteers. Among those young volunteers was the then eight-year-old Narendra Modi.
....when PM Modi went to Ahmedabad
After 12 years, Narendra Modi left his home in Vadnagar and moved to Ahmedabad and began working in his uncle's canteen. After a few months, he purchased a bicycle and began selling tea on it. He set up his first stall near the Geeta Mandir in Ahmedabad, a frequented by RSS pracharaks and volunteers.
Narendra Modi himself told this
After some time, Modi began to grow closer to the state-level leadership of the RSS, based in Ahmedabad. The late journalist M.V. Kamat, in his biography of Narendra Modi , quoted him as saying, "At that time, there were 10-12 people living at the RSS headquarters in Gujarat. Vakil Sahib asked me to come and live there. Every morning, I would prepare breakfast and tea for the pracharaks and other workers, then go to the shakha. After returning, I would sweep and mop the entire headquarters. After that, I would wash my clothes and those of Inamdar Sahib."
