What is BMI and how is it calculated?

For example, if someone weighs 70 kg and is 1.83 meters (6 feet) tall, their BMI would be-
70 / (1.83 × 1.83) = 20.90
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. A BMI below 18.5 means you're underweight, and a BMI above 25 indicates you're at risk of overweight or obesity.
BMI alone does not give the full picture.
Experts believe that while BMI is a good starting point, it's not completely accurate, especially for Indians. This is because BMI doesn't reflect belly fat, which is considered the most dangerous.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) says that instead of just looking at BMI, it's also important to measure belly fat and waist size. A waistline greater than 90 centimeters for men or greater than 80 centimeters for women could be a sign of obesity and heart disease.
What should be the right weight according to height?
Below is a chart showing the ideal weight for men and women according to their height.
152 cm (5 ft): women 40–50 kg, men 43–53 kg
160 cm (5.3 ft): women 47–57 kg, men 50–61 kg
165 cm (5.5 ft): women 51–62 kg, men 55–68 kg
170 cm (5.7 ft): women 55–67 kg, men 60–73 kg
175 cm (5.9 ft): women 59–72 kg, men 65–79 kg
180 cm (6 ft): women 63–77 kg, men 70–85 kg
Why is it important to maintain a healthy weight?
Excessive weight can lead to diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease, and joint problems. Being underweight can lead to weakness, malnutrition, and weakened immunity.
Therefore, it's important that people not only check their BMI but also monitor their belly fat and waist size. Achieving a healthy weight can be achieved through a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress-free living. A balanced height and weight balance is crucial not only for looking good but also for long-term health. A correct BMI and waist size protect your health.
