'I was stung more than 100 times in relentless 15-minute wasp attack at holiday park'

A mum has shared her horror after her holiday was "ruined" when she was stung more than 100 times by a swarm of wasps at a caravan park. Alison Riley, 34, was enjoying a break with her husband, Adam, and their two sons when she left the group to fetch a hairband from their caravan on July 29.

As Alison, a mother of two, was making her way across the Haven Caravan Park in Skegness, she found herself suddenly engulfed by hundreds of wasps, which began to sting her relentlessly. She recalls screaming and running around the park, but was unable to shake off the swarm of insects.

Eventually, other holidaymakers came to her aid, using a fire hose to spray her and towels to swat the wasps away. In her desperation to get rid of them, Alison even had to remove her top, saying that "all dignity went out of the window".

Alison, who works as a primary school teacher in Leeds, recounted: "Literally within a split second I was swarmed. I didn't see anything I was just swarmed.

"I just screamed and started running around in any direction. I remember crying and shouting 'someone help me'. They were crawling around my hair, and stuck in my leggings. They were just relentless and constantly stinging me.

"It was honestly the scariest thing I have ever experienced. I was stung well over 100 times, the nurse stopped counting after 100."

The assault continued for approximately 15 minutes until all the wasps were eventually removed from her body, with paramedics arriving 30 minutes afterwards to examine her condition. Alison says she is starting to recover now, but remains extremely itchy and is taking antihistamines, steroid tablets, creams, and codeine for the pain.

The mum says she cannot recall ever being stung by a wasp before that day, though she had always been quite frightened of them. According to Alison, pest control eventually discovered a nest containing a "few thousand" wasps.

They also explained the swarm likely occurred because the mum ventured too close to the nest and they felt under threat - but Alison says she never spotted it. She says it was difficult to enjoy the remainder of the holiday, which continued until Friday, as she was terrified to venture outside and had to drive across the caravan park to reach activities.

Alison said: "I was just in absolute agony, my head felt like it was fire and was throbbing. My legs were so swollen that I couldn't move. I am just lucky that I didn't go into anaphylaxis.

"Now I am just absolutely terrified of going out and it really spoiled the holiday. Going outside was just horrific. I was constantly looking out for wasps or anything flying around me."
