According to Alexander Gintsburg, director of the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, which created the COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V and works on epidemics, this vaccine will be personalized. It cannot be used for anyone else. The world cancer drug business was $203 billion in 2022, which is estimated to reach $400 billion by 2028. US and European companies control 60 to 65 percent of this market. US companies alone have a 45 to 50 percent share. Companies like Moderna, Merck, BioNTech, Roche, and Pfizer are leading in this field. In 2023, Merck's Keytruda drug sales alone were $25 billion and it was about 40 percent of the company's total revenue. That is, Merck company is earning 40 percent of its revenue from cancer drugs alone.

 

The question is, what is the problem for American and European companies with a one-time cure? The answer is that pharma companies have a monopoly on their medicines through patents. A permanent cure can affect the market for their existing medicines. On the other hand, the argument against this is that why any company would avoid finding a permanent cure. On the contrary, it will try to become a market leader by bringing it to the market.

 

Cancer treatment is expensive.

Another argument in favor of the conspiracy claim is that cancer treatment is long-term, which includes expensive procedures such as chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. For example, a single dose of Keytruda can cost up to $10,000, or Rs 8.5 to 9 lakh in Indian rupees. If cancer is cured by a one-time vaccine, it can reduce the demand for long-term treatment. In response to this, the argument is that pharma companies spend billions of dollars every year on research. In 2023, the expenditure on pharma R&D worldwide was more than $250 billion, with the highest expenditure in the field of oncology, that is, cancer. If companies were stopping treatment, why would they spend so much?

Some claim that pharmaceutical companies have suppressed cheaper or alternative treatments in the past to keep their expensive drugs selling. The argument in response is that between 2020 and 2023, the FDA in the US approved more than 50 new oncology drugs. If companies were holding back treatments, so many new drugs would not be coming to the market.

 

In such a situation, the advice is that the data of the Russian vaccine should be made public first and only then any conclusion can be reached about the Western companies. There is no concrete evidence that American and European companies are deliberately trying to stop cancer treatment.
