Bidding to consolidate its position in the burgeoning Indian electric two-wheeler (E2W) market, market leader TVS Motor has launched a new escooter, TVS Orbiter, at an ex-showroom price of INR 99,900.
The escooter comes with a 3.1 kWh battery, range of 158 km, and a bootspace of 34 litres.
“With TVS Orbiter, we are expanding our EV ecosystem and accelerating the adoption of electric mobility in India,” said Gaurav Gupta, president and India 2W Business at TVS Motor.
TVS Motor competes with the likes of Bajaj Auto, Ola Electric, Ather Energy, and Oben Electric among others.
TVS Motor’s E2W registrations stand at 20,461 units in August so far, placing it at the top spot, as per Vahan data. It is followed by Ather Energy and Ola Electric in the second and third spots, respectively.
Ather Energy’s E2W registrations have jumped significantly to 14,723 units, while that of Ola Electric stands at 14,488 units in August so far.
Notably, TVS Motor was at the top spot in July as well, followed by Bajaj Auto. While TVS Motor’s registrations were above the 20K mark, Bajaj’s Chetak escooter sales slipped below that level.
Amid the intense competition, companies are launching new models to attract customers. For instance, Ather Energy is betting on its family scooter Ather Rizta to enhance its presence across the country.
In its Q1 earnings statement, Ather Energy said that the new escooter, which starts at a comparatively lower price of INR 1.09 Lakh in Bengaluru, has seen robust demand since its launch. Similarly, Ola Electric, earlier this month, unveiled its new S1 Pro Sport model, priced at nearly INR 1.5 Lakh.
The growth trajectory of the homegrown EV market relies on companies trimming the initial costs of the vehicles so that they are comparable to the regular ICE vehicles, improvement in the charging infrastructure, among others.
Despite this, India’s EV market is on an unprecedented growth trajectory and is poised to become a $132 Bn industry by 2030.
