When most professionals in the tech world dream of climbing the corporate ladder, Pradeep Kannan decided to step down from it. In 2019, the former Operations Head at Oracle India walked away from a high-paying job and a comfortable life in Bengaluru to move back to his hometown, Karur in Tamil Nadu, with one unconventional idea — to sell falooda ice cream. What started as a small outlet has now turned into a successful business with over 18 stores across India and Dubai.
Kannan’s story began with a moment of deep introspection. Despite holding a senior position at Oracle, he said he felt an unshakable urge to pursue something of his own. “People laughed at me for leaving my job. I had the perfect 9-5, good salary, beautiful family. Society said: You’re settled. But something inside me wasn’t,” Kannan wrote in a viral post on X (formerly Twitter).
The decision to leave behind a stable job and city life was met with skepticism. “Everyone told me I had the perfect routine: a corporate job, a good salary, and a settled family life. But I knew I wanted to build something of my own, so I resigned and went back to Karur to start a falooda ice-cream shop. People thought I had lost my mind,” he shared.
Building ‘The Falooda Shop’
What began as a small local dessert counter has evolved into The Falooda Shop — a growing franchise chain that now runs more than 18 outlets across India and Dubai. In his post, Kannan summed up his journey with the words, “My journey has gone from small town dreams → AC offices → franchise kitchens → global shelves.”
He now describes his brand as “India’s next aspirational D2C ice-cream brand” and says this is just the beginning. The entrepreneur’s path reflects a larger trend of professionals leaving corporate jobs to pursue passion-led ventures.
Work Experience and Educational
Before founding The Falooda Shop, Pradeep Kannan built a strong professional foundation across major organizations in India and the UAE. He began his career as an Assistant Manager in Operations at Celebrity Fashions Limited in Chennai, before moving to Dubai to work with Al Seer in supply chain management. On returning to India, he joined Genpact in Bengaluru as a Business Analyst and later spent six years at Oracle as a Repair Supplier Manager. His last corporate role was as Operations Head at Oracle India, which he left in 2019 to pursue entrepreneurship.
Kannan holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Technology from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), India, completed between 2003 and 2007. He later pursued a Postgraduate Programme in Management from Mumbai Business School Pvt. Ltd. in 2009–2010. His educational grounding in both fashion and management played a key role in shaping his understanding of brand creation and business operations.
