Delhi Airport flight ops delayed due to technical issue with Air Traffic Control system

Flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) were disrupted on Friday following a technical issue in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system, leading to delays in several departures and arrivals.

According to an advisory issued by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), efforts are underway to restore normal operations.

More than 100 flights were delayed on Friday, as per a PTI report, which cited sources. The disruption, which began on Thursday evening, affected both departures and arrivals as air traffic controllers were forced to prepare flight plans manually.

“Due to a technical issue with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system, flight operations at IGIA are experiencing delays. Their team is actively working with all stakeholders including DIAL to resolve it at the earliest,” the Delhi Airport said in a post on X.

Delhi airport delay: Why are flight ops disrupted today?
The problem lies in the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), which provides data to the Auto Track System (AMS) for generating flight plans. With the automated process disrupted, controllers are manually entering flight details using available data, a time-consuming task that has led to congestion and significant delays, the report further said.

The national capital’s airport, which handles over 1,500 flight movements daily, has been witnessing departure delays averaging around 50 minutes, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24.

Passengers have been urged to stay in touch with their respective airlines for real-time updates. “Passengers are advised to stay in touch with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused,” the airport advisory added.

Airlines issue advisories
SpiceJet, too, in a post on X urged passengers to keep a check on their flight status. "Due to ATC (Air Traffic Control) congestion at Delhi, all Departures/Arrivals and their consequential flights might get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status via spicejet.com/#status."

IndiGo also issued an advisory, noting that operations at Delhi and several northern regions were affected. “Flight operations at Delhi Airport are currently experiencing delays due to a technical issue with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. As a result, flight operations at Delhi and several northern regions are impacted,” the airline said in a post on X. “We understand that extended wait times, both on the ground and onboard, may cause inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate your patience. Please be assured that our crew and ground teams are actively assisting and doing their best to make your wait as smooth as possible. For the latest updates on your flight, we encourage you to check our website. Thank you for your continued understanding.”

Air India also issued a Travel Advisory, confirming that the ATC issue in Delhi is impacting operations across all airlines. “A technical issue with the ATC system in Delhi is impacting flight operations across all airlines, leading to delays and longer wait times at the airport and onboard aircraft. We regret the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption, which is beyond our control, and appreciate your patience,” the airline said in a post. “Our cabin crew and on-ground staff at the airport are extending immediate assistance to reduce passenger inconvenience. We request you to check your flight status at https://airindia.com/in/en/manage/flight-status.html before heading to the airport.”
